A correction on BB-8. It was both a practical effect and CGI. They have two practical versions a radio controlled and puppet with operator edited out (digitally of course), but there were many (even as far as most) where a CGI version was used. There were also many, many times the practical BB-8 was replaced by a CGI version during post-production.
ILM showed and talked about it at a VFX conference the year after the movie was released. VFX reels like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPrXFX2oYFU show CGI BB-8s too.

Does this trope also appply to robots or creatures balancing on one ball instead of one wheel? This would include Piers Anthony's Polarians (from his Cluster Series) and the real life Ballbots...
