How does all this mesh with the modern prevalence of cell phones? I would guess that police generally wouldn't care if you use your cell as long as you weren't being rude, and I suppose that if you are actually jailed then they take it from you (maybe?), but I have absolutely no legal knowledge or experience here. Someone who does should explain the situation.
