He was "murdered" in front of everyone's eyes, but in the end he shared some memories with Nunnally, his sister. What the heck? That's C.C.'s Power as a Geass Person (remember the episode in the "memory castle"?)! I guess he took her 'geass-curse' so she could live a normal life from that point on.
