"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI've launched the new related trope, Network Death, which is when a network ceases to exist, either by simply failing or by getting an extreme rebranding to something else with a new name and focus. The latter case must have both to qualify.
There's a lot of entries here that fit under Network Death, like TNN or G4. My question is: Should they remain on this page as well?
My first thought is that they should stay as long as they underwent an actual bit of Network Decay before being changed to something else. A failing sports channel changing its name and relaunching as a cartoon channel all at once would not stay here. That said, I'm not sure I see any examples here that didn't drift content-wise at least a little before changing.
Anyone else have thoughts?
Is there a trope that's the opposite of this? Like how TBS, TNT, and USA went from vague, broadcast-whatever-we-can-get channels (though the final years of USA Cartoon Express are more along this trope) to more focused concepts (TBS = comedy, TNT = drama, USA = ... characters(?))?
Why would it? Netflix is a movie rental network. I feel like that's broad enough to prevent decay.
CMT Pure Country has a show called 'Pure Vintage' that was supposed to air vintage country video. Nowadays, we get stuff like 'Boy Like Me' from Jessica Harp!

Why is disney channel under completely abandoned? It has Phineas and Ferb, doesn't it?
Hide / Show RepliesTotal Abandonment: The channel, with the exception of perhaps a few shows, has long abandoned its original concept. Disney channel originally started out as a family variety channel with shows for all ages and demographics, and plenty of good cartoons that all ages can enjoy. Now, for the last few years, all that they mostly show, with the exception of the afore mentioned Phineas and Ferb, are mediocre tweencoms and repeats of old mediocre tweencoms, mostly brewed by 'It's a Laugh Productions', aimed at only one demographic;tweens. Not to mention the channel has been showing a fair amount of WB material. The reason for all this; money, dear boy.
Edited by spike12Let's add Great American Country (or GAC): They are now getting reruns of shows from both Food Network (Paulas Home Cooking and Road Tasted) and Travel Channel (John Ratzenbergs Made In America).
They also air the Gaither Gospel Hour, which has gospel music!
Jeremy.
I think GOG falls under "Unique Situations" as much like TV Tropes itself, it doesn't really affect anything else, as there's no limited timeslots or anything.
I added examples of regional cable channels in Canada under the Network Decay trope and placed them under "Slipped". My examples I supplied were ASN (a regional cable channel in Atlantic Canada, now known as CTV Two Atlantic) and Access (once an educational TV channel in Alberta, now also their affiliate of the CTV Two system, similar to ASN). Not sure if it even applies, but I thought I'd want to bring these in.
Born in Newfoundland and Labrador and moved to Ottawa subsequently.History Channel: is it still slipped or has it gone into total abandonment territory? Even the topical shows relating to specific holidays or events are increasingly incorporating Dan Browning.
Disney is starting to become Yoda. It's the oldest Cartoon you can think of, Yoda is the oldest jedi that's in any of the movies.
Which means... O_O which Star Wars episode is real life currently at the moment for Disney...?
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH (And I Must Scream)!!!!!!!
I understand that the general consensus on the internet on Sarah Palin is that she was not a very good politician, but the section regarding "Sarah Palin's Alaska" not only missed the point of the series, but seems to be more of a Take That! tirade against Palin and her family. In fact, I'd say that this show, out of all of TLC's other shows, seems to be one of the most "Learning" oriented: While it seems somewhat like a reality show, it is meant to be more of a travelogue of Alaska. As such, it doesn't really seem to add much to this article.
I'd suggest either making it less of an aggressive Take That! or just removing it entirely.
cum Hide / Show RepliesShould we add something to Cartoon Network? They showed Wizard of Oz on Sunday. Not one of its animated cheesy adaptations, but the live-action Judy Garland flick. By then, I concluded Stewie Snyder was on drugs.
Edited by 204.10.219.157It's just status quo for Crappy Network. That's my new name for them until they come to their senses, if they ever do.
Does the "this website" example really belong on this page, what with TV Tropes not being a network and all?
Hide / Show RepliesI was thinking about deleting it, as it makes little sense, but I made a folder for "Non-Television Related" subjects for now.
Edited by GundamforceCartoon Network's entry has a surprising tendency to accumulate Natter and ultimately irrelevant information (OH NOEZ NOT ANOTHER LIVE ACTION SHOW I MUST COMMENT ON THIS). The section has been streamlined to the four most relevant (and general) bullet points, with a comment asking people only to add information that is some significant departure to the channels current state (mostly new cartoons, with the occasional new, not as well performing live action series).
Also Adult Swim is in all but airspace a separate channel, and has been moved to "Major Shifts that Still Fit the Network's Name"
Hide / Show RepliesI think Adult Swim should go to "Slipped", considering that Adult Swim actually started off as a midnight version of Toonami. Oh and someone edited the Cartoon Network section in a matter that it would be more appropriate in "Slipped", so if there are any changes or exceptions, i'll probably move it there as well.
Edited by GundamforceAm I the only one that feels like this is the most depressing trope on the entire site?
Hide / Show RepliesI've got a puzzle for you: if the History Channel did a documentary on the ancient past in which the History Channel had actual history, would it be true?
Under Retro Television Network's description, Equity broadcasting is said to have a copyright on their control distribution system. This shouldn't be the case - you can't copyright an idea or a method. Any manual describing the system would have a copyright, but that probably isn't what was intended. It sounds like a patented system, but I'm unsure - if anyone could find a relevant patent or any other clues as to what was intended, it would be much appreciated.
I went ahead and moved Cartoon Network to "Unique Circumstances". As soon as the network starts making a recovery, some executive decides to pump more live action programming in there for no reason. Even though every attempt has been a colossal failure. So instead of just moving CN from folder to folder it seems best to leave it in Unique Circumstances.
Hide / Show RepliesI moved Speed Channel to the Unique Circumstances folder for similar reasons. Yes, they show auto-related programs, but the vast majority of their programming is NASCAR related. I'm a NASCAR fan, but I can understand why people hate it.
My Xbox Live gamertag/PSN ID is tifosiotaku. See you online!TCM gets to keep the Heroic Aversion folder to themselves, they earned it. This is why the "Too Broad to Decay" folder was added. And unless someone can find an aversion that is equally heroic as TCM's stubborn refusal in the face of Executive Meddling, let's keep it that way.
Hide / Show RepliesDoes anyone remember when HBO used to show movies? Seems like yesterday. Movies and stand-up comedy specials. The occasional concert. Seems like they almost exclusively show their original series these days. I might add this when I've had some time to look at it and I am not whacked out on codene.
