Is it just me, or does this sort of thing almost always happen in a desert? The original Cowbow Bebop Mushroom Samba, The Simpsons space coyote, Avatar's cactus juice, Duckman's Native American/Bobcat Goldthwait chili... it happens so often that I almost wonder if it doesn't deserve its own page. Something like, I dunno, "Desert Madness."

Maybe it has something to do with (or is a reference to) Peyote, a hallucinogenic cactus.

Or maybe it's just a shortcut to justify the fact that the protagonists don't care about what they eat/drink because of an advanced state of starvation/dehydration. Just to support the Mushroom Samba moment.
