Na, there are usually indicators that something is Fanservice.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhat if we focus this trope not around a specific type of attractive character, but on the concept of male characters who are intended to be fanservice? Especially considering the prevalence of pretty boys and Bishōnen, using "muscular/manly" as a sole criterion seems to send the wrong message—that only people who fit into that category can possibly be considered attractive/fanservicey.
I've re-worked the guidelines for Mr. Fanservice, so we can include or exclude examples based on a more specific set of qualifications.
What do you think? Are they fine?
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. Hide / Show RepliesMaybe not so much with the muscle talk? There are plenty of skinny nerd boys who take their shirts off and are meant to be seen as fanservice.
I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again. The muscles don't have to be bulging. They just have to be muscles, however lean as they may be.
I'll point that out on the main page.
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. Now that this trope has been renamed, we're gonna have to weed out the misuses. This is going to take a while though, and it will certainly require the efforts of more than one troper to fix the wicks, as well as clean up the subpages, as they are full of false examples.
Hide / Show RepliesThe name was changed due to absolutely horrendous misuse. The trope is supposed to be a Spear Counterpart to Ms. Fanservice, but chicks (and gay males I guess) kept using it just to gush about male characters they were attracted to.
I see. Well, it's going to be a hard task cleaning up misuses. Good luck.
pity, I liked the old name. But yes, the misuse is blatant. Every single attractive male is mistaken for Fanservice. Maybe a big "LEAD CHARACTERS ARE NOT FANSERVICE" in the trope description would help?
Is there anything average tropers can do, like just deleting any obviously false entry?
To be fair, female characters get the same thing. And just deleting or changing the old name is best.
I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again.I think it's better to redefine the guidelines that makes a Mr. Fanservice, instead of an offhand mentioning of a Shirtless Scene and the introduction boiling down to "Why, hello there, Mister McStud~!"
Edited by Serocco In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Producers also think that women want sensitive boys or a bad man, so will market their "bait" like that. Remember those insulting calenders intended to arouse women and all they were was a guy doing housework?
I cut up one dozen new men and you will die somewhat, again and again. Those calenders are insulting to both men and women, really.
Edited by Serocco In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. Why the hell aren't we calling this trope Manservice!?
— Just continuing to believe is not the answer. Fullmetal Alchemist Hide / Show RepliesBecause that sounds like Fanservice For Men, which is more on the lines of Male Gaze.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI still think that would be awesome :/
— Just continuing to believe is not the answer. Fullmetal AlchemistCan we start an Image Picking Discussion somewhere? I like my tropes about hot guys to come with pictures of hot guys ;P
Hide / Show RepliesThis page has example subpages so images go on them by medium rather than the main page. So far, Video Games, Webcomics, Film, and Anime & Manga have images. Get looking*!
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.I want to add a ymmv in the twilight section for mr fanservice, because I find Robert hotter than Taylor. What are the guidelines for this?
knowledge junkie Hide / Show RepliesThe guideline is "don't do it" because 1) this trope isn't YMMV and 2) that's not what this trope is for.
I realized this trope is mostly about opinions, so should it be considered a YMMV entry?
