In "Briideless Groom", Christine Mc Intyre mistakes Shemp Howard for her cousin, covering him with kisses. When she learns that he isn't her cousin she slaps him repeatedly in the face.

- In classical Russian play The Auditor by Fonvizin the corrupt administration of a backveld town are alarmed by the knews of the coming of an anonymous governmental auditor. Two local gossip-mongers mistake a travelling pen-pusher for the auditor (because he's not paying for his stay in the inn, which is clearly a sign of VIP to them, but he's just broke), and Hilarity Ensues when they all try to butter him up.
