Qrow from RWBY would definately be this trope as he is Ruby's Uncle and he also trained her in using her scythe as a weapon. He's not dead yet although there are death flags on him by the fans for this very trope...
I removed this line:
- Chiron from Greek Mythology makes the trope Older Than Dirt.
First of all the earliest reference to Chiron dying from Heracles's arrows is only Older Than Feudalism. But more to the point, this isn't the trope. Cheiron was a mentor to many heroes, and Cheiron died in some myths, but these two things are not connected. He was not Heracles's mentor and died only from association with other centaurs Heracles was fighting. Stories of him mentoring heroes, even those born after Heracles died, never mention him dying and leaving them mentorless.
Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.
I wonder if we could give another name or title to this trope which calls to mind what Joseph Campbell called in the Hero's Journey the step of "Losing the Guide". It's essentially when the Mentor is killed or cannot go any further with the Hero(es) on their journey.
Peach Lover 94 It's a far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done. A far better resting place that I go to, than I've ever known.
