Spoiler if you haven't seen the prequel: While it's arguably canon, the rebel from Cube Zero is punished with non-specific brain surgery and is thrown in the cube, becoming the broken savant in the original film. He's neither crazy nor autistic, just brain damaged. (Brain modified?)
