The original story... well, it was a short story that had no criminals, no gold, and about 5 named characters (in the present). The adaptation was definitely not "semi-faithful" in any meaningful sense of the term (Combs is specifically named as playing a character not present in the original story - but in fact the same is true for nearly every single character in the film)
