How about a Social Crutch? Not quite the Only Friend, but Bob is the only friend of Alice who is brave enough to warn Alice when she's leaning on the Moral Event Horizon guardrail.

The Narcissistic, Borderline, Histrionic, Dependent, and Avoidant personality disorder all rely on another person as a Living Emotional Crutch. The main difference is in the way the other person has to show their support.

What if the Living Emotional Crutch is a more Cruel to Be Kind type? She throws the Dogged Nice Guy a bone and became his friend, but she frequently reminds him that they are just that - friends. And that's all he can ever hope to be. Seems like Kick the Dog, until it turns out she only does it because leading him on would encourage his possessive side, and keeps him from getting any wrong ideas about their relationship.
