Actually, I thought it had potential for an expanded meaning as well. For instance, for beautiful to go with beautiful. Like in the Disney Hunchback of Notre Dame, when the beautiful gypsy Esmeralda is in a triangle with the ugly gypsy Quasimodo and the handsome captain of the guard Phoebus, and while like (gypsy) doesn't go with like, pretty most certainly goes with pretty. Even in stories where there isn't a serious triangle, nature adjusts to make sure that pretty is with pretty and ugly is with ugly.
This trope's name is way too broad for its definition. I honestly thought that it was a much more general trope describing couples who share similar personalities, occupations, or some other trait that is not shared with any other potential Love Interest for either of them.
