Ragnarok Online. The Bard (themselves a Lethal Joke Class) can get a Frenzy Guitar, the ultimate lethal joke equipment when combined with multiple items.

1. The Joke part: like the Knight's Frenzy, their attack speed when equipped with said Guitar is locked to the maximum in the server (being it 190 or 195 or 200, or whatever the maximum is), and their Dexterity - the main source of power for physical attacks on a class derived from archers - is dropped to the natural Zero, only adding back dexterity that comes baked on items, making it useless for physical attacks.

2. The Lethal part: it interacts with CHANCE ON HIT processes of any card on the Bard's equipment. With some high levels of Intelligence, and cards that spew out fire or ice lances, or Eletrical storms, or METEORS, or BLIZZARDS on a chance per hit, and those being triggered at 1% or 5%... of 190 hits per second, that means they WILL execute once every second at least, every single one of the effects, multiplied by the Intelligence (magical attack) stat, at zero mana cost. Suddenly a rain of multiple effects on a single spot can catch newer players off guard. Triggered by a Bard. And a Guitar.

3. The Bonus: In the War of Emperium - a war between guilds - the Emperium (a giant rock to be smashed as objective) was broken by raw damage per second, which meant that big hitters like Mages and Assassins could take one down mostly by themselves. Until it was changed to NUMBER OF HITS. Just like plants in the game, that go down with always 1 point of damage per hit, regardless of power. So forget the damage, and put the PER SECOND up. Cue a bunch of Bards linked to a Paladin that could drain his health points in favor of the Bards, surrounding an Emp, and smashing it with the visual equivalent of a Fender Stratocaster. Bards went from Support Class to Emperium smashers if they ever got the Frenzy Guitar: the Death By a Thousand El Kabongs.

Lethal Joke squared: Did I mention that the Frenzy Guitar drains Hit Points? Yes, leave it equipped for too long and it will kill the user. Like a curse and the original Knight's Frenzy.

GTA Online: back when the Rhino could take 8 full RPG shots to the face (seven, blowing up on the eighth), a group of youtubers set out to disable a Rhino with snowballs. It took 29 players shooting snowballs at it for 15 minutes, but the tank smoked and died. Only shots to the engine looked more effective. Deathby A Thousand Cuts anyone?

Another video where a flare glued to the helicopter rotor... it melted the blade which broke off, with the corresponding crash following.

I've seen some Karma Charger videos where there are Lethal Joke Items that cross into Game Breaker territory. Is there such a trope other than "Purposely Overpowered" that fits this sort of trope? The Lethal Joke Items' punchlines are that they're literally not meant for multiplayer, and look straight up ridiculous.

This list of examples was deleted almost entirely:

  • Terraria: Quite a number of weapons manage to be very effective while being fun and silly:
    • Of particular note are the Party Bullets, which are crafted by buying empty casings from the Arms Dealer and Confetti from the Party Girl and then combining them, and the Bananarangs, one of the strongest Boomerang-class weapons.
    • There is also the KO Cannon, which is a cartoonish boxing-glove cannon that behaves like the Harpoon.
    • The Party Girl's fireworks are mostly there to look pretty, but their explosions can wound and kill monsters. One player even managed to slaughter the Moon Lord with an elaborate fireworks setup in under 4 seconds.
    • The best pickaxe pre-hardmode is the Reaver Shark. Yes, a shark with a pickaxe head. There's also the Chainsaw Shark, which is a shark with chainsaw teeth that functions as an actual chainsaw.
    • Apart from that, players can find and use a Swordfish (or Obsidian Swordfish) as a spearlike weapon! The Obsidian Swordfish is even the second-strongest Spear in the game in terms of raw attack power.
    • The Meowmere is a sword that has a hilt depicting a cat's face, and fires rainbow-trailing cats when swung. It also has the highest base damage of any sword in the game.
    • The Candy Corn Rifle is, of course, a gun that shoots candy corn. Sounds silly, but it's basically a Megashark with bouncing, piercing bullets that can rip through groups of enemies like tissue paper.

They were removed with the explanation " Lethal Joke Item isn't just funny looking, please read the description". I'm tempted to re-add them with the explanation "These examples aren't just funny looking, please read the examples", but I don't want to start an Edit War, so I'm putting them here first.

All those items are, at the very least, comparable to other items available at the same point of the game. In many cases, they even are (or were at the point) the best items at that point. It could be debated whether they're powerful enough to be this or Nerf Arm, but they're not "just funny looking".

For example, the Meowmere is definitely this. I mean, it's the most powerful sword in the game, period. The Reaver Shark is so powerful that many guides tell you to start fishing in the ocean right after starting to play so that you get it as soon as possible. The Party Bullets are notable for dealing a good chunk of damage for the absurdly cheap they are, so they're very recomendable if you don't have a lot of money or resources. The Obsidian Swordfish is, as said, one of the strongest spears in the game, even if it has suffered from the game's Power Creep. And the Candy Corn Rifle was at one point the strongest bullet-type in the game, even if, again, it has suffered from Power Creep.

Yeah, those aren't examples. They're funny looking items that are good.

To be this trope, they have to not be good in terms of basic stats. They have to be underwhelming statistically, but effective in some other manner. The only example that seems to actually count is the Fireworks, which sounds like it's a joke item that can use used lethally.

I'm a bit dubious about most of the Legend of Zelda examples here. A lot of them aren't joke items to begin with, and the fact that they can, in one specific situation, be used to damage a boss doesn't make them lethal, either. It's really more of a Weaksauce Weakness, or something like that.

Suppose the Joke Weapon in question really was lame, but gets upgraded to this at a critical moment. This trope or different?

This came out of the Worms example; I don't know enough about the game to be confident in my ability to fix the really atrocious grammar, so I'm leaving it here for someone who does.

  • Banna Bomb? One the ultimate weapon, capable of deliving wide area, highly exposive fruit death. Though Worms has a lot of powerful and ridiculous weapons (Carpet bombs that fire high damage carpets, super sheep that fly, and can cause instant death if you launch the opponent into the water, etc)

132 is the rudest number.
