What about Sgt. Floyd Pepper? He was always the most active member of the band, even if Dr. Teeth is the lead.

It seems to me that the "Entwistle-J.P. Jones barrier" could just be the "John rule". John Entwistle, John Paul Jones, John Myung, John Deacon, John Mc Vie, and that's just off the top of my head!

I was surprised to see John Myung (Dream Theater) on this page. Sure, he's a phenomenal bassist. But with John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess and Mike Mangini (or Mike Portnoy, earlier) topping all kinds of "best guitarist/keyboardist/drummer" lists year after year, and James La Brie handling the majority of the interviews, Myung should definitely be excluded by the "Entwistle/J.P.Jones barrier"

I took the liberty of removing him. He was listed as "Type A" with no other description. Type A does not apply, IMHO, when all the other instrumentalists in the band are also virtuosos.

Sounds like a good call to me. (Though I wonder what's the over/under on someone adding him back by the end of this month.)

Anyone think we could get this separated out by music genre? It doesn't have to be particularly fine-grained (for example, it's not necessary to list brutal death metal and technical death metal bassists separately), but some classification would make it more readable and less of a bass wall of text.

For example, list Cliff Burton (thrash metal), Tony Choy (technical death metal) and Steve Di Giorgio (...all sorts of metal) all under Metal.

So, uh, how about them Giants? Which ones? ...Does it matter?

Unsure about some of the entries. Several of these guys are bassists I've never heard of. On the one hand, my tastes certainly aren't universal, and don't infallibly reflect informed opinion. On the other hand, I suspect that several of these guys—especially some of the alleged Type Cs—are "well-known" only to highly devoted fans, and don't really qualify for the trope. For example, I don't know what an "Arif Mirabdolbaghi" is, so have to take it on faith that he belongs here.

It'd be fantastic if tropers could glance at this list who aren't superfans, but are knowledgeable about the musicians/bands cited, and could prune or re-type accordingly.

I can see your point in a few cases, but I don't think it really matters. Even if the bands themselves aren't especially well-known, if the bass-player is in some way an aspect of their popularity, then speaking in simple proportions of fame they qualify as a lead bassist.

Besides, I don't think if I randomly said "Chris Squire" in a crowd (baring standing in a music shop) that anyone would know who I was talking about.
