I love Sheldon Cooper from the The Big Bang Theory's excuse for using this to denote an unborn baby. "It's a gender-neutral pronoun, if you're offended, take it up with the English language."
Edited by MrStranger616Ripto refers to Zoe, the clearly female fairy, as an "it" when he orders Crush to kill her. He says "Crush! Kill it!" Another thing showing how little he thinks of her, and fairies in general, was him offering to feed her to Gulp!
I was thinking of making a transphobic villain who uses "it" to denote non-binary individuals.
Edited by MrStranger616Don't most non-binary people go by "they" or "them"? I also refer to genderless Pokémon by the sex they most resemble. For this very reason. Human or not, they deserve respect.
Update: I've had a talk with a friend on the matter, though between the time of posting this comment and the talk with them, I guess it's more the intent behind the word than the word itself the makes it disrespectful. The friend in question said that "Apathy doesn't always equal disrespect", concerning how when you catch a fairy with a net in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the options are "Let it go" or "Keep it in a bottle", despite all the fairies (at least the ones shown in-game) being female.

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - Fighteer
Apparently, having a proper name doesn't exempt you from this either (examples of which demonstrate). Case in point, Starro from DC Comics and Gozer from Ghostbusters (1984) are referred to this way.
