I've corrected that Father Ted was a Channel Four show, but I'm also not sure about "they would have made a concious choice not to set it in England". It was created by two Irish writers as a vehicle for an Irish comedian based, I believe, on a character created by another Irish writer for the same comedian. I'm not sure making the main character English was ever considered as an option.
Does the trope apply to Irish priests actually in Ireland, or just to Irish priests abroad?
