Re. the Vidiians from Star Trek: Voyager. The Vidiians have extremely advanced genetic engineering technology which has defeated most other diseases. But it's implied that the Phage has co-evolved specifically to be more virulent in genetically engineered hosts, and that therefore the Vidiians' are trapped in a Red Queen Race with the virus.

I haven't actually seen Spiderman: far from home, but isn't it Homecoming where blue-collar workers use alien weapons? Unless they did it twice...

This is just a suggestion, but consider using this as the trope image - the Daleks actually can climb stairs, so they themselves aren't really an example, but the Daleks in this cartoon are. And, you know, Rule of Funny. If it doesn't illustrate the trope well enough, then we can stick with the image we have.

(I would post this in Image Pickin', but it wouldn't let me post.)

I somewhat like it. Dunno why you can't post in IP; I can see no bans on your file. You might want to try again.

I don't quite know if the Tau'ri from Stargate actually belong here. They did acquire tech from aliens, but they either build it all themselves, and therefore understand it, or (in the case of the stargate) learned how it worked from experience. Wouldn't that be something where the culture in question had a major technological growth spurt?

Should this possibly be split into two categories?

I was thinking of one where aliens are using someone else's technology and another where they've essentially fallen into Schizo Tech due to bad writing?

I think such a split could be plausible, although aliens using Schizo Tech is not necessarily bad writing. Try proposing a YKTTW along the lines of, eh, Technology Through Conquest for the former category and crib the appropriate examples from this page to make your case.

See you in the discussion pages.

I don't think aliens using Schizo Tech necessarily qualifies as bad writing. Tropes Are Not Bad, donchaknow.

Your split proposal sounds reasonable. Why don't you go to YKTTW and make a topic called, eh, Technology Through Conquest? You can take examples from this page to build your case.

See you in the discussion pages.

Where would we place something like Cowboys and Aliens, where the aliens seem to have technology for laser cannons but all run into battle hand to hand like Mooks? And as a result, lose. Are they insufficiently advanced, or is there a separate trope for beings with power that won't use it for fear of beating the good guys?
