Wedge's face was visible because the visor is transparent, he also didn't have a full airtight seal on the suit, since the X-wing pilot gear provides a short-term "Magcon" field, the same as the hangar openings on the ships. It holds air, but not heat.
The only time Gear is close to being in space in the animated series is when Braniac sneakily takes over the Watchtower, and that's for like maybe 30 seconds of decompression. It's not even shown if it has an oxygen supply function (though it wouldn't surprise me), but his helmet is never seen being used as a space helmet.
