I might have a real life example but I'm not sure it counts, Spillover by David Quammen talks about the next human pandemic and how it will come from animals. It is about 15 years old at this point.

How does this sound as a page quote: "'When a hot scientist comes to town and tells y'all to leave, do it.'— IMDB comment on the moral of Dantes Peak." ?

Does an example have to be based purely on -science-? By that I mean would, say, a lone economist predicting major -economic- failure based on facts presented, qualify for this trope?

I know this might be a little weird.. but my name literally is Jor-el and I was named after Superman's father. Heck, my entire name is related to Superman in some fashion. Actually, my entire name is related to Superman in some form, whether directly or indirectly. To this day, I often tell people something based on my own observations and experiences (including family members) and am often brushed off or told I'm over-exaggerating or just making it up out of ignorance. I'd say quite a lot of the time, I'm usually proven correct later down the road. While some people may take joy in saying "I told you so" I find myself getting tired of actually having to say it. It'd be nice of people listened to me for a change before they found out the hard way (literally or metaphorically). And just because not everything I've observed has been proven true by general consensus, doesn't mean it won't be later on. It's usually just a matter of time, and I gotta say it gets tiresome being the only one to notice these things or be willing to say what no one else wants to say or acknowledge.

This is my first time reading this page, and I am struck by how many of the examples don't fit- in fact, in many cases, they are exactly what the description says this trope does not referr to.

These are the four I was for sure able to take out as being The Cassandras.

  • In Dragon Ball Z: Bardock, the Father of Goku, is given the power to see the future so he can see the destruction of his planet. No one believes him when he tells the Saiyans that Frieza thinks they have become too powerful. In a way, he becomes like the original Jor-El, except replace natural disaster with Frieza, and sending their children to other planets is standard Saiyan practice.

  • In 12 Monkeys, the Bruce Willis' character is seen as having a Cassandra Complex, because he keeps predicting the disease that will kill a large percentage of the population. Subverted because he is actually from the future.

  • Dr. Loomis of the Halloween films.
    • Not really. While it's true that the state medical board doesn't completely value his expert opinion about Michael Meyers, the people who actually have to deal with a Meyers rampage are 100% aware of how dangerous he is, and any time Loomis comes back to Haddonfield, they react in complete seriousness and prepare as best they can for what they KNOW is about to happen. Now, you want to pull a Jor El out of a horror movie franchise, you want Tommy Jarvis from the Friday the 13th films. They threw him in jail and accused HIM of copycatting Jason...about 2 hours before the sheriff came face-to-face with Jason himself.

  • The prophet Jeremiah, although most of the later Biblical Prophets would probably fit this trope as well, which isn't too surprising when you realize how heavily Siegel and Shuster were drawing on the Bible for inspiration when they were coming up with the Superman mythos. (There's a reason that "jeremiad" is a synonym for Cassandra Truth.) This makes this trope Older Than Feudalism.
    • "Because god told me" isn't exactly what could be called "scientific methods/proof", making this a case (As the synonym correctly suggests) of a Cassandra Truth, and him therefore not a Jor El.
