Walter Jon Williams book "Hardwired" has a quite satisfying variation on the Hover-tank-theme. Air-cushioned and fitted with Chobham, and customized by the owner who tossed out the original (anemic) turbine engines and replaced them with the engines from his fighter jet, used in a previous career. He uses it for high-speed smuggling runs while carrying enough firepower to Deal With Things.
