I don't think this trope carries Unfortunate Implications. The implications would have to be an accident for that to happen. This trope pretty much has it black and white: Jews are greedy bastards.
Hide / Show RepliesI don't think this example fits:
- Weyland Yutani Executive Carter J Burke, who does not even flinch at the fact that he murdered 157 innocent colonists by sending them to a ship filled with Aliens whose young painfully punch their way out through your heart once they are done forcibly growing inside you. What he does care about, true to being this trope, is that it was a "bad call" that was necessary to get money made in time before another company can find the ship. Paul Reisure laments having played a character so hateful that his own mother whispered "good" when said Aliens killed him.
After all, the fact that Burke is Jewish is never played up in the film as a reason for why he is a greedy corporate scumbag. Just because a character happens to be both a Jew and personally greedy doesn't make it the "greedy jew" stereotype.
You've got roaming bands of armed, aggressive, tyrannical plumbers coming to your door, saying "Use our service, or else!" Hide / Show RepliesBesides, is it even established that Burke is Jewish? The example has now been removed anyway, so I'm just asking out of curiosity. Burke can be both a Jewish and a Gentile name, and the character doesn't wear any insignia that identify him as either a religious (kippa, tallit or anything) or a secular Jew (Star of David pendant)...
Indian casinos also have it now. Expect some Magical Native American to argue that casinos are wrong, that gambling isn't traditional, but every non-magical type will be this.
This wouldn't be so bad, except given the history of the trope, and the history of what the U.S. government's done to Indians.
Hide / Show RepliesI agree. And as for that, while it's great that Laser-Guided Karma allowed the Natives to finally get the white man's money, this isn't what they wanted; they wanted to be left alone in their own native land.
But...isn't this about Jews?
The whole Museum of Tolerance is so contradictory to itself, I don't whether to laugh or vomit. I mean, wouldn't tolerance be NOT focusing on cultural stereotypes?
