Should we really count pieces that haven't continued into an era where their tropes have been discredited? The Epic of Gilgamesh not dropping cliched elements is obviously not gonna, because the original was finished several millenia ago, within a time where these weren't discredited yet. Star Trek shows which use the Planet of Hats Trope were still made in eras after this trope was discredited, which definetly IS noteworthy
Would it be okay to add some new examples of trope names to the Web Original section?
Question about this example:
- The first Yakuza was dubbed, wasn't the biggest hit, and the rest have remained undubbed. While there were plans to dub the third game, the franchise became popular enough to warrant dubs for spinoffs, and the 7th game is a Soft Reboot, every mainline game has been sub only, and probably will remain sub only.
Would the "My friends play it" reason so many people don't migrate from World Of Warcraft (And to a lesser extent, other MM Os) count? If it weren't for the fact that it exists and has existed for so long and manages to exist, World Of Warcraft (no matter how much I praise it) wouldn't be the juggernaut it is today without it's community and very community-oriented devs.

"Nowadays, it would be unacceptable for the Arch-Enemy of a superhero to be anything but equal or greater in power than the hero." I don't think this is true, the idea that the Villain who's Brian rather then brawn is the greatest threat remains what audiences prefer to see whether they admit it or not. hell TDK made The Joker less of a physical threat then he usually is in the Comics.
Hey - not meaning to step on anybody's toes, but I excised the bit about why Chekhov's accent was poorly done (by Koenig) in the original Trek. The description of his bad accent was that he "replaced v's with w's rather than vice-versa" - but that's actually not a poorly-done Russian accent.
For one thing, it's a well-known foreign accent phenomenon sometimes called "overcompensation," where speakers of a foreign tongue know they'll have a tendency to mispronounce certain things based on their own native tongue (like "V" instead of "W" for Russian speakers of English), and self-consciously (accidentally) do the reverse (i.e., pronouncing a "W" in place of a "V").
For another, I can vouch for this phenomenon first-hand: my wife is Russian-born, an excellent speaker of English (she was a translation major at university), and occasionally does precisely this! (So do many of her friends who I speak with.)
So, no slam intended, but while I agree that Koenig's accent left something to be desired, the swapping of the "V" and "W" sounds wasn't a good reason why.
Didn't want to try to fit all of that into the edit justification and not make it clear.
Edited by JoePGuy Hide / Show RepliesSo basically Chekhov was a native Russian who was trying too hard to speak English. Got it.
Don't make me destroy you. @ Castle SeriesYeah, basically! Where were you when I was trying to condense that to an edit justification?
Though I'd still largely agree that Walter Koenig's accent wasn't stellar, which is why I wouldn't just cut the whole reference.
So basically it was Chekhov playing a Russian who was trying too hard too speak English, but his accent was a failure even in that regard. And to get more meta, Walter Koenig is playing as Chekhov playing as a fake Russian trying too hard to speak English and failing at it. :D
Don't make me destroy you. @ Castle SeriesDoes anyone else think that Pluto should be subject to the Grandfather Clause?
I am the Tippy Toe Zombie I like to Limbo Often I fall on people's headsCan there meta examples be added like TV Tropes ones?
Hide / Show RepliesSince TV Tropes is mentioned in the description, sure. If you're sure about your examples, make a separate folder for TV Tropes at the bottom of the list.
The part of the C99 rationale below made me think of this trope, but since it isn't the main point of the page anyway, I'll just dump it here:
