I removed:

  • This is also a reference to the Ultra-Humanite, the earliest comic supervillain, more recognizable as having evolved into a large brained albino gorilla after Lex Luthor accidentally stole his look.

The Ultra-Humanite's big gimmick was transplanting his own brain into new bodies. The gorilla was a body that he designed himself and engineered to house his intellect; he didn't "evolve" into it.

Red Dwarf example was contested, I'll leave it here until someone corrects it.

  • Red Dwarf: Over the course of 3 million years the inbred and irradiated descendents of Lister's cat somehow evolved into this.
    • Justified. Evolution directs species into forms and habits that best fit their habitat. The best fit for living aboard a space ship designed for human habitation is to look and act human.

I think that could be a Hand Wave, but it's not a solid justification for a variety of reasons. However, the trope is still implied, I think, rather than explicit — unless it was at some point explicitly stated that the cat was somehow "meant" to evolve into a human form, this is more "convergent evolution" than "goal-oriented."

I don't have enough knowledge of the show to help decide either way, though. Just my opinions.
