"The hair must be gathered above the base of the neck; hair gathered below the jawline generally says something entirely different about the character."

So "below the jawline" results in an immediate disqualification?

Yes. Essentially, "tails" created by tying a band around loose hair far below the hairline doesn't have the same connotations.

If it says "something different", what is is saying exactly?

I don't think anyone has quantified it yet. Just that it isn't this trope. It's easier to say that it's not this than to say what it specifically is.

I always thought that pigtails referred to braids, not non-plaited bunches like the examples here. Why don't braided pigtails have their own category?

Because they have the same connotations when braided, as far as I know. Why do you think they need to be a separate trope?

Removed the following examples. Please add more description before returning them to the page, since it is unclear if they are "character x has pigtails to indicate youthfulness" or just "character x has pigtails"

I'll put back the example from El Chavo Del Ocho: The character of la chilindrina has always been played by an adult woman, and I think her pigtails served to show the audience that she's young (and very bratty/immature).
