Actually, the whole Real Life section of this trope is problematic. Only 2-3 of the entries have anything to do with "Someone trying to get another person to believe they're crazy" - and even these are marginal, "someone on the internet said so" cases. I know we're not Wikipedia, but still.
Commented out the following Zero Context Examples.
Literature
- Used on the main character as a worthiness test in Neverwhere.
- Forms a major part of the plot in the Phryne Fisher mystery Ruddy Gore.
Live-Action TV
- Game of Thrones: This is one of the things the Master Torturer does to Theon, disorienting both him and the show's viewers.
- An EastEnders plot had Nick doing this to his mum.
- The way Christian treats Ana in Fifty Shades of Grey has strong shades of this.
I'm not as knowledgeable on the subject of gaslighting, so I don't feel comfortable adding this myself but I think this trope page should be altered to describe what gaslighting ISN'T because it's being used far too often. Especially as this could undermine what is a serious issue.
Is it considered the same or a separate trope if gaslighting is done to the viewer, like in A Clockwork Orange?
In the Real Life section there's a lengthy thing where it talks about abusive cult tactics - but none of them really seem to fit the definition of Gaslighting. Just... abusive cult tactics of any stripe.
