Yes Kirk would be the id cause he shoots everything with a pulse (and his penis), Mccoy would be superego as he's the most morally conscious and Spock the ego (cold intellectual who reconciles morality with desire)

I am not sure why the Superego is marked as the "logical and intellectual" aspect, where it is clearly and originally (and in the many examples of this in popular media) meant to be the moral aspect. In fact, Freud regarded both Id and Superego as inherently irrational with our rational Ego needing to reconcile both forces. So the Ego is rational, the Id is emotional and the Superego is moral.

Agreed. I thought this was odd too.

100% agree. This trope needs a name change.

Edit: I just thought of one: Spirited Logical And Mediator Trio.

Edit 2: and another one: The Decision Trio.

Edit 3: I thought of three good names for the sub-tropes, that could also be the basis for the name of the main trope:

The Id => The Passionate Humanist

The Super Ego => The Stoic Utilitarian

The Ego => The Balanced Moderator

I like these names because it involves both the temperament and philosophy these characters are supposed to have, and makes it so that “The Ego” can be a more general trope, to make any duo with opposing philosophies a trio.

That's the problem that arises when you make a trope so ingrained with a set of characters that happen to fit into the roles of the freudian psyche. As much as I like Star Trek and the original trio, I feel that Picard is a much better example of a superego character than Spock ever was, since more focus is laid on his morals and ideals rather than strict logic like Spock, who does still fit into the superego role due to his strict adherence to the supression of his emotions to the point where it may harm his logical reasoning at times. Frankly speaking, superego should correlate more to The Fettered or Principles Zealot, rather than The Spock, especially since the superego by Freud's own definition doesn't concern itself with logic in the pursuit of what it considers proper moral behavior.

What would be a Jungian equivalent, or is the Four-Temperament Ensemble enough?

Wow. I didn't know that the Beatles could form a Freudian Trio. However it is hard to imagine a row between John and George, with Paul trying to break them up. I imagine there to be more rivalry between John and Paul. Three seems too small a number for me. I gotta have Ringo too. They work well as a group of four with differing temperments and philosophies.
