Not really, because he meant it metaphorically. Not all Final Bosses are final exams per the definition of this trope.

Yeah, I guess it is a common metaphor. Recalling it made me smile though.

  • The last bosses of Final Fantasy VI, VII, and VIII all have special gameplay mechanisms that allow you to use every member of your party in them (but not all at once).

Not really an example; you can pretty easily defeat all the aforementioned bosses without ever bringing in the reserves. There's not really any reward to using them other than having backup if you lose a party member.
