The "Carolos Linoleum" bit in the Discworld entry doesn't come from any of the books as far as I know, and a Google search doesn't bring any fanfic up. Is it from some Emporium spin-off (I didn't think they'd done the Bestiary yet)?
Hide / Show RepliesSince no-one got back to me about this, I removed it. Posted here for posterity and in case anyone does know where, if anywhere, it comes from. (And because, canonicity aside, it's actually quite good.)
- Discworld naturalist, Carolos Linoleum, devised the Latatian taxonomy that gives all creatures a scentific name. He turned in completely uncontroversial performance on mundane animals, but allowed his prejudices to get the better of him on sentient races. Possibly figuring trolls and dwarves were too thick to understand Latatian, he classifed the Dwarf race as Hortus Decorus (Garden Ornament), and Trolls became Stultus Sternum (Stupid Rock). Vampires were filed under Nosferatu Sanguinaie (Bloody Undead) and werewolves as Canii Bonii (Good Doggies). The Watch classed his death as Suicide.
I've just learned that it's from Discworld Noir, so I'm reinstating it under video games.
Removed natter:
- "Buggers" in Enders Game.
- Some have trouble taking this seriously...
- Although given Card's now-frequently-expressed opinions about homosexuality, nowadays a lot of people aren't so sure it was inadvertent.
- On the other hand, in America (some parts, at least), "bugger" is a synonym for "screw" or "f*** ," as in the phrase "bugger off".
- Pretty sure that's British slang: The other wiki's etymology indicates that you're probably in the rare part and also describes the phenomenon you're experiencing. Also several insulting words over the years have both lost their original intent to become insulting as well as were not insulting at all see this trope and how stupid has changed over the time

I see that nobody had gotten rid of this trope. I think that it should be gotten rid of.
Hide / Show RepliesThere's nothing fantastic about slurs. Whoever came up with that idea should be punished.
