Does this trope only apply to video games or can it apply to other media as well? Because Hermione seemed to have this role in the first few Harry Potter novels.

I don't remember much loathing for Tikal from the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom. Omochao, yes, but not Tikal. Or was I just late to the party?
