"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanRED DWARF ain't the trope namer, is it, kidz? — seems to me Hal-9000 first said it, to Dave Bowman, in 2001 A Space Odyssey, hmmm . . . ? — -Unc Sumer-
Hide / Show RepliesJust because it's the first known example, doesn't make it the namer. Red Dwarf was likely chosen over 2001 because it was the show's entire premise, and the trope itself was uttered several times in the first episode.
ahhh, True Nuff, thanx ... glad to savour the distinction, again - (must've been my millenial zeitgeist bias, from being in the timeline since 1963, on — a fan of both, but assimilated A.C.Clarke's & Kubrik's tropery during "formative years", heh...)
btw - i'd always kinda figured the Red Dwarf usage was a call-out to 2001, myself ...

Edited by 70.67.10.185I just added an example from Neuromancer. I didn't go into detail about how and why Corto was shot down (EMP weapons, his side knew about them but sent them in anyway, etc.) Anyone think that should be there? I think it's fairly clear as-is.
In Doctor Who, knowing what we do now, millions of Dalek survivors as of series 2 and at least thousands of Time Lord survivors in The End of Time, though the latter get put back into the Time War, so that's wibbly wobbly timey wimey, should we remove the Time War bit?
