I was going to update this example to factor in their first World Series win, but first this needs a rewrite, if it is to be kept:

  • The Texas Rangers, sad to say, entered this territory from 2010 to 2012. Consecutive American League pennants (2010 and 2011) and no World Series title. In 2012, they were forced to play in a wild-card play-in game after losing the American League West division chase to a team that took over first place for the last day of the regular season-the Oakland Athletics. And then, the Rangers lost *that* wild-card game to the Baltimore Orioles.
    • And after missing two postseasons (losing to the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2013 tiebreaker, finishing third worst in the league in 2014), 2015 and 2016 had the Rangers falling to the Toronto Blue Jays - giving in after opening 2-0 in 2015 and a sweep the following season.

I was wondering if it would be allowed to add the Bassmaster Classic to the Sports category, as I was going to include some big name anglers, who made the classic multiple times, but never won the event. All these people though became successful TV show hosts whose programs are quite popular with outdoor sports fans.

About the 2011 Red Sox and Atlanta Braves entry in the MLB Folder, shouldn't we get rid of that? That is more like content that belongs in the Miracle Rally page, given that entry only spans one game in a single season.

So it seems like everyone is on board, but I'm going to delete a couple examples that particularly incensed me. They were about football teams, The New England Patriots specifically. Before 2001 they were more or less terrible, no hope, and this trope is not at all applicable. But someone attempted to justify their history afterwards as the same, and that's funny because the Patriots run (currently at 16 years) features 5 superbowls, 11 AFC championship games, and a win percentage that equates to 12 wins a year for the past 16 years. This is potentially the most dominant run by a major sports team in history (not intending to start any arguments with this btw) but I cannot see a legitimate reason to keep that example.

I don't know how much of the line this crosses, but since the Anaheim Ducks just fired him, can we put an NHL Entry for Coach Bruce Boudreau? More than a fair chunk of the recent fizzling on both the Caps and Ducks happened under his coaching, particularly their Game 7 losses (2007-10 with the Caps, and 2012-16 with the Ducks).

What do you call the opposite of this?

German soccer teams (and, after the 2016 Handball European Championship maybe its Handball teams as well) are famous for being (as they say in German) "Turniermannschaften", essentially an okay or even crummy team that grows under pressure and advances in single elimination tournaments far beyond what they "ought to" be able to do. The perfect examples in soccer would be Germany in 1954, 1982, 1986 and 2002, where they advanced to the final (and winning it in 1954) with a team that was far from the second best in the world.

Is this really an example? And the Justifying Edit needs to go.

  • on whether the Texas Rangers are still this; in 2010 and 2011, they've gone to the World Series two years in a row.
    • To be fair(and this is coming from a Rangers fan), both losses can essentially be chalked up to "They Just Didn't Care" on the part of the Rangers. Coming out of their spectacular series against New York in 2010, the Rangers were dominated by the San Francisco Giants, despite having one of the best pitching aces in modern baseball(Cliff Lee) on their lineup(and, in fact, the 4 WS games where Lee was the starting pitcher were losses, whereas the one game started by Rangers veteran and backup Colby Lewis was their sole win) and several powerful hitters(Josh Hamilton, who was the bane of the Yankees, for example). In 2011, the Rangers were, once again, favored to get their first Series win, and came within a single strike of winning it all TWICE in the same game(6). After they lost game 6, the Rangers started game 7 with an early win but didn't even try after Saint Louis took the lead away.

Yeah, I just got rid of several justifying edits, complaining about teams people hates, teams that are just plain bad rather than "good but fail on the big stage", and several modern entries that aren't established as this trope b/c just 1-3 years isn't enough. The Rangers don't belong, IMO.

Watch out where you step, or we'll be afoot.
