"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI removed this from the Twilight example.
- (Twilight example goes here.)
- The Oatmeal gives her the name "Pants."
It just doesn't feel right. I think the Twilight fans can just have this one, it's kind of sad that even in the escapist character section of TV Tropes that they would be Nattered like that.
H.B. WardI pulled a bunch of examples for Fan Myopia reasons. I agree that most of the ones I recognize are probably examples, but they had no explanation (or no explanation other than "X is a Badass", which doesn't necessarily mean they're an Escapist Character) to explain why they fit this trope. The problematic examples were:
- Kagome Higurashi from Inuyasha.
- Westley from The Princess Bride.
- The vampire Lestat.
- Doc Savage.
- Agent Pendergast, though more so later on.
- Eragon from The Inheritance Cycle overflows with this.
- Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock.
- Final Fantasy VII's Cloud Strife appears to be this, just like every other video game protagonist around... at first. Turns out he's a deconstruction of it.
- Guilty Gear's Sol Badguy, voiced by its creator Daisuke Ishiwatari himself. You can only wish you're THAT Badass.
- Devil May Cry's Dante, tell me you don't wish you'd be that Bad Ass.
- Bayonetta is a rare female, male-aimed example.
Cloud was readded, but I reverted the readdition because it was precisely the same and had no explanation at all. To whoever who thinks Cloud is a good example: Go ahead and add it again, but please add some actual content in it before doing so. Not everyone can read the writer's mind to see what makes Cloud a deconstruction of an escapist character.
Same applies for the rest, I'd add to them myself if any of these were from a work I'm familiar with.
Edited by TheEvenPrimeExcept I did give a light explanation. By explaining that he started out as a typical "badass" mercenary who only cares about the money, a common nerd fantasy. And I believe going into detail on why he's a deconstruction would be a huge spoiler for the game.
"I'll show you fear, there is no hell, only darkness." My twitterOh yeah, sorry. However, being a mercenary hardly makes one an escapist character.
Yes. But being a typical tough-as-nails, stoic, Mercenary who only cares about money is a very common nerd fantasy, and those kinds of characters tend to be escapist characters when they're the protagonists.
"I'll show you fear, there is no hell, only darkness." My twitterYou should write more about it. Especially about the deconstruction part.
But I already explained that writing more about the deconstruction would be a big spoiler for the game, plus, it wouldn't feel write for me to do it since I'm only going by spoilers and the recap on the Advent Children DVD. An entry going into detail on Cloud's deconstructing of the trope probably belongs on FF 7's work page.
