Wouldn't the closest thing to this just be someone who is emotionally numb and traumatized, or am I misunderstanding this trope?

I have read this page and the laconic several times. I still don't understand the trope. The explanation is so vague and hard to grasp. Can someone explain it better?

Honorable mention goes to the Sponge Bob Square Pants CD "Best Day Ever", in which Sponge Bob claims to be one of these after Gary goes missing. In a pretty upbeat song.
