Unless I'm mistaken, this trope is about the player having to work hard to achieve certain bad endings.
In the visual novel sections there are good examples, such as tsukihime or chaos head, but others don't fit, like katawa shoujo.
Getting a bad ending with just one or two choices is hardly earning it, right?

I think it's less "work hard" as "you're not going to get this Bad Ending without trying" and making a ridiculously bone-headed move is like the visual novel version of working.
