I don't think they stopped using the dolly with the invention of the zoom lense. At least according to my professor, the dolly is preferred to a zoom in most cases, if possible.

I've worked as a grip and as a dolly grip, and I can confirm that nearly everyone shooting on video uses a dolly, even on really low budget productions where they juryrigged one from a skateboard. I can see somebody choosing the zoom for artistic reasons, like if they want a handheld camcorder look, but it's not considered preferable and it hasn't replaced dolly movements by a long shot.
