Disney owns Zorro? I thought that Zorro Productions, Inc. claimed ownership despite it being ruled that Zorro is in the public domain.

If I'm not mistaken, part of trademark law (as opposed to copyright) is that a trademark holder *has* to protect the trademark if the holder wants to maintain it. If you allow usage to some and then try to restrict it to others, it can be considered passed into public usage and then anyone can use it for any purpose, including subverting the original intent. It would be only fair to note that in the article. (I.e., it's not always *just* a matter of greedy corporations preying upon the little guy.)
