In the new fourth edition, however, the spell no longer does that. Instead, it deals slightly above average damage, then keeps doing damage each turn until the subject shrugs off the effect.
Too much discussion of the game mechanics; plus, in 3.5, it does (2*level)d6 damage on a failed save, and 5d6 on a successful save (with disintegration being just a special effect if the target is killed).
