I'll admit that my first thought upon seeing the title of the trope was that it referred to how, in many FP Ses, going diagonally using forward and strafe nearly doubled your speed. It was used all of the time in Goldeneye games and I seem to remember it happened in Doom as well.

They both have the same affect on gameplay but they have different causes and show up in different genres. It may be worthwhile to make a separate trope entry for that and call it Strafe Speed Bonus or something like that.

Should we count it if you can't go diagonally at all? Mathematically, it's exactly the same (at least in two dimensions). You can go four directions 41% faster than the other four directions. It's just that which direction is which switches.
