People seem to have a lot of trouble distinguishing this from "dead all along". Surely if we know fairly early on that the characters are dead and it's not a plot twist, then it's not this trope? Therefore "the others", "the sixth sense" and "Jacobs ladder" don't belong here, since the fact they're dead DOESN'T come up until the end of the film and is meant to be a surprise?

The reveal. That's like saying isn't The Sixth Sense like Dead Like Me?
In Goethe's Faust I (ll. 702ff.) Faust wants to commit suicide and hopes "To pierce the ether’s high, unknown dominions, / To reach new spheres of pure activity" (but ends up not doing it). Is that a subverted invocation of this trope?
