Holo from Spice and Wolf. She's a wolf goddess visually based on a species that looks very similar to foxes, and her cleverness is a defining character trait. Is that enough to make her an example?

Is it "cleverness" as in "not being dumb", or is it "cleverness" as in "outwitting, outtricking and outsmarting everyone else"? If it's the latter, then it's this trope.

Uncanny business sense, as well as being very relationship savvy. She could probably trick and swindle easily if she wanted to, but most of what we see is her and the other protagonist playing sly games with each other. She is very much a trickster, though, usually acting for her own amusement.

I've recently purged the page of all non-cunning or non-trickstery examples. If you see an example that is trickstery and cunning, feel free to elaborate on why it's so, and add the example to the trope's page.

Here's what I purged: (Note: text in bold is my commentary)

     Advertising
  • A lesser-known segment of the Tootsie Roll pop commercial featured a fox. Was it cunning?

     Anime and Manga
  • Neither the nine-tailed fox demon from Naruto, nor its host (the titular Naruto) seem to fit this trope at first. However, the latter does often show moments of surprising brilliance which happen more frequently as the story goes by. I don't think "the main character becoming slightly more clever as the story goes by" is this trope
  • Makoto in Kanon is a Kitsune that used to live on the nearby hill. Yuuichi took care of her one day when she was injured and she grew vary attached. She holds grudges and can be spiteful, but is generally a good person. But is she cunning?
  • Renamon and her evolutions from Digimon Tamers. Are they cunning?

     Comic Books
  • The French comic book De Cape Et De Crocs has a French fox as one of the heroes. But was he cunning? Was he an interpretation of Reynard?

    Film
  • Slightly from Peter Pan wears a fox suit as clothing. Was he cunning?
  • One of the animals Mad Madam Mim turns into during the Wizard Duel from The Sword In The Stone is a pink fox. If it's only one of such animal guises, how does it support this trope?

    Literature
  • Green Eggs And Ham, Fox In Socks, and probably other works of Dr Seuss. Are these foxes cunning?
  • The Plague Dogs has the tod (he doesn't have a name), who helps the main characters learn how to survive in the wild... in return for their help bringing down larger prey, such as sheep. So, he was pragmatic - but was he cunning?
  • Tom McCaughren's Run With the Wind and it's five sequels (think Watership Down but with Irish foxes instead of British rabbits). Were those foxes cunning?

    Live Action TV

    Newspaper Comics
  • The U.S. Acres comic strip had a fox, but that is a villain for sure. But was he cunning?

    Puppet Shows

    Video Games
  • Keatons in The Legend Of Zelda Majoras Mask. Are they cunning?
  • Rif from "Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb". Was Rif cunning?
  • The Ice Princess of Spyro: A Hero's Tail is an anthropomorphic fox. Was she cunning?
  • The "Suppa Tenko" fan depiction of Ran Yakumo from Touhou. Was she cunning?
  • Triangle Heart had Kuon, a kitsune who was very angry at humanity. She was befriended by Nanoha. But was she cunning?
  • The fox at the shrine in Persona 4 is smart enough to communicate with the protagonist, but is kind-hearted rather than mischievous or cruel; it asks the protagonist to fulfill the wishes of others, and in return, helps him and his friends with their trips into the TV world. It's never explicitly stated, but the fox is likely a divine servant of the deity Inari. So, since it isn't cunning, it's not this trope

    Western Animation
  • Averted in the Columbia-Screen Gems The Fox And The Crow series of the '40s and '50s - the Fox is rather prissy and gullible, constantly getting outwitted by the Crow. Straight examples are here to demonstrate the trope; aversions will just clutter the example space
  • Nigel from an episode of Rupert. Was he cunning?

I think I've read some versions of the Odyssey that has Circe say a fox would be a fitting animal for Odysseus would be. However, I'm not sure if that remains a relatively consistent thing happening in it, especially from older accounts of the story, so if someone else could confirm that for me, it could be an example that's Older Than Dirt.

Well, I'm not an Odyssey specialist, so I just added your example as you worded it. Maybe Wiki Magic will later clarify this example.
