Should we add a The Boy Who Cried Wolf for the actual fable?

I tried to stare into the abyss, but then it got distracted by a squirrel and ran away.

How about the Michael Rosen video "goldfish" where his dad keeps saying "Wake up! Wake up! Your goldfish is dead!"

"Back in the 1990s, in a lot of divorce cases, there were parents fighting for custody, who falsely accused the other parents of child molestation. Sometimes, they coached their kids to go along with it. As a result, many judges simply don't want to hear accusations of child sex abuse. "

Is there a specific source for this? I'm wondering if this was a fad strategy lawyers were pushing on their clients at the time or if it was a general trend.

"The 2009 scandal over climate change data forgeries made a lot of people who had been previously convinced of the evils of industrialization to turn the deaf ear to alerts of global warming of other form of climate change altogether. This was done deliberately by the hackers and those that spread the word; the controversy consisted entirely of individual lines of personal e-mails taken out of context. Several separate investigations were conducted, and every single one found that there was no data forgery."

Unfortunately, those who conducted the investigations can be Googled, and there are easily discovered official and unofficial ties between them and those who benefit by promoting global warming, which brings their partiality into question.

A more positive outcome of the scandal was that people started doing their own research into climate change. This results in a better-informed populace, better able to evaluate the evidence for themselves. Among what can be studied is history.

One thing that the study of weather through history tells anyone, is that we simply do not know enough. Not enough to know whether the larger of modern fluctuations are the result of mankind's activities, or the normal variance of global weather, which does not operate on a minor or short scale.

When the planes were grounded after 9/11, global temperatures went up one to three degrees. (Depending on where readings were specifically being taken.)

When Mount Tambora erupted in 1816, it caused 'The Year Without a Summer'. Similar, if not quite as severe effects, occurred after Krakatoa erupted in 1883.

We just don't know enough of the world and the world's cycle of weather to know if humans can alter things on the same scale as one volcano.

what's the name of the related trope where (usually due to being too quick to accuse and failing to do the proper research and get evidence) a person earnestly makes false accusations/false solutions for mysteries, and then has trouble convincing the police/superiors when they really DO solve the mystery?

I like the current picture, but its kind of tall. I recomend someone remove the top two panels. It should be fine without it.

Not the trope if the habitual liar is believed. Possibly a subversion, but in the absence of a full quotes tab to make it clear I hesitate to move it there as the first one.

Orson: They decided not to fall for anymore of his lies. The next night while he was on guard, he saw a young man out hunting. "Boy!" he called, "There's a boy coming!" but none of the other wolves believed him, so there was no-one to help him when... when...
Sheldon: What's wrong, Orson?
Orson: What's wrong is that even a liar can sometimes tell the truth! Come on!
