I deleted the bit about not being able to uncock a gun without pulling the trigger. It implied that the weapon must be fired or remain cocked. That's not how most (all?) guns work. One may have to use the trigger to uncock the gun, but as long as you ease the hammer down, it won't fire.

Many guns, the Berreta 92 and its variants coming to mind, have a decocking lever so you can decock the gun very safely and very quickly, allowing you to carry the gun with the safety off, due to the fact that subsequent shots are single-action but the first is double.

This troper just made an edit saying something like that. It is standard practice, is it not, to decock your gun when not in an active engagement?

Basically, yeah. There's no real point to packing a double action pistol if you carry cocked, CZ-75 or similar aside.
