Whether it was intentional or not, the four main charactes in The Wizard of Oz could each be tied to one of the four basic elements.

Dorothy's last name is Gale, which is a strong wind, plus it was a Cyclone (a strong wind) that first brought her to Oz.

Scarecrows are a symbol of Fall/Autumn/Harvest which is associated with Earth.

The Tin Woodman is kind of a stretch, however, Tin is associated with the planet Jupiter, which in turn is associated with the color blue, which is in turn associated with water.

Lions are predatory animals which are associated with fire.

I think the four forces in DC comics (Speed, Strength, Sage and Still) may fit in this trope
