Would David Yost be a real-life example, like Chris Eliot?
David Yost played Billy on the first four seasons of Power Rangers, and Billy was a nerd who initially couldn't hold his own in a fight unmorphed.
Problem was, Yost was actually built like a freight train, and the show's producers hid him behind baggy clothing to obscure his build. After the second season or so, they didn't make a point of his physique, but rather quit trying so hard to hide it while showing his fighting skills improving.
