Edited by Iqbal Darkness is The Power of Life Hide / Show RepliesI kind of missed the image I posted (one of the chess knights from Dai No Daibouken), but I suppose it was too low focus as opposed to Alice in Wonderland. But that one only shows the 'pawn'. Why not get an image that shows all of the chess pieces?
Are there any chess motifs in Neon Genesis Evangelion?
I’m just that kind of guy, you know? Here's a suggestion for what we could add to the page:
- The Rook: They have the most straightforward attacks, moving vertically or horizontally. For this reason, they tend to be The Big Guy in a Five-Man Band, though they may or may not be The Stoic.
- The Bishop: Moving diagonally, they are usually The Smart Guy. Or, for Bonus Points, they can even be a Church Militant for added symbolism.
- The Knight: Since these move in the most unusual direction (best summed up as an "L-shape"), it's usually either a Cloud Cuckoolander Genius Ditz who happens to be Crazy Awesome, or maybe just someone who's willing to think outside the box. May also be a Knight in Shining Armor (or in darker works, sour).
- The Queen: Can move in any direction for any number of squares. This makes the character perhaps the most powerful piece, who may even have a game breaker power of some kind. Need not be Always Female, but usually is for obvious reasons. Losing this character often counts as a heavy loss, but not outright game over.
- The King: Moves in any direction, but only one square. He's likely a Squishy Wizard who leads the Five-Man Band, and as his capture ends the game, he's probably The Hero.
- The Pawn: This piece's symbolism is perhaps the most widely known, with the term being synonymous with an easily-manipulated and expendable person. However, these pieces still have the ability to become queens. Often The Load, Tagalong Kid, or even The Chick.
Anyone care to make edits?
Edited by StoogebieDoes theme naming tie into this? I know of a work am writing a story where some of the characters had surnames that were also chess pieces; Bishop, Knight and King. Do we have a trope for this?
Edited by Stoogebie Hide / Show RepliesTo add to my first post, it's worth noting that two of the main protagonists play chess, and the character with "Knight" as his surname is The Lancer in the story. There's also the case of one of the weakest characters "becoming a queen", if you will. Phew! There's chess all over the place!
Edited by StoogebieThis quote from the main article: "...the Queen is The Chick, the King is The Hero, the Rook is the Big Guy, the Bishop is the Smart Guy, and the Knight is The Lancer..." To be honest, I believe the Queen is more fitting for The Hero, as this piece is arguably the most powerful (in terms of movement) and the King seems more like The Chick (most limited moves, but losing this piece is a game-breaker), or at the very least, something like the MacGuffin Girl. Think we should change this?
The page says that the King is *not an efficient piece*, which is actually not true. Going by points (regarding its pure fighting power), it usually receives a 4 point rating, making it stronger than bishops or knights, especially in the endgame. Considering that, it is a piece of average strength, being weaker than a Queen or a Rook but stronger than all the other pieces. The actual value as a fighting piece can be disputed, but calling it an inefficient piece is underestimating its power a lot
