I am similarly concerned. I would start it, but I'm strapped for time, plus my knowledge base is not nearly large enough.
Star Wars has, without a doubt, the most irreparably broken, interminably hateful, astonishingly miserable and viciously toxic fandom of all time. It has absolutely no competition. A huge portion of people in it genuinely cannot express even a scintilla of genuine joy and gratitude for the amount of content they have been given and their standards for what constitutes "good" Star Wars is so labyrinthine that I swear that it's deliberate at this point. That they deliberately refuse to acknowledge how impossible to please they because being constantly insatiable and overwhelmed by anger brings them more entertainment than just taking a deep breath and trying to be happy. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be so deprived of happiness in your life that you need to gain a false sense of exaltation from being perpetually antagonistic towards something you think you like.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhat do people usually do when they want to discuss Internet Backdraft?
Broken Base seems to find a lot of use on YMMV pages where the term that's more applicable is Internet Backdraft; it mostly seems to be used as a get-around towards the latter's flame bait status, because a lot of the examples I see only really list the singular reaction of a fanbase (with an "other side" added on as an afterthought that, if it exists at all, only makes up 5-10% of reactions).
I can't say I know what to do about this, because for every whiny Complaining About Shows You Don't Like iteration of "Broken Base", there's another one that just lists a genuine reaction. Perhaps there should be some way to verify Internet Backdraft so people aren't tempted to just replace it with another trope?
I'm just a dumbass who loves LOONA.A lot of entries for this that I've seen have listed, in addition to two opposing sides, a third side that doesn't have any opinion one war or another on a given topic. Should this third side be included, since they don't really have as much stake in issues as sides that are strongly for or against them?
Should we have a definition of what "sustained" means for the broken base? I saw in a few places how "Sustained" means 6 months, but is that the site's official policy? Unofficial standard? Should we codify that into the trope language? This might be useful for when big events happen in our media, because then everyone WANTS to put down a base breaker, only to suddenly have it shoved in our faces that it's "too soon". Which is weird because the immediate reactions will be easier to gauge rather than trying to do selective polling down the line.
Thoughts?
Lord Eric Wu, Grandmaster of the order of Troping.Should there be a sliding scale of base fractureness? (broken)
Also, why does this go onto YMMV, when the fandom heresy goes into flame bait? Shouldn't this go onto flame bait as well?
Hide / Show RepliesNo.
Broken Base is for issues the split the fandom 50-50 down the middle. There are other tropes, such as Vocal Minority when things are a little more lopsided.
We are hesitant to add more tropes to Flame Bait because Flame Bait tropes are not allowed to have examples anywhere on the site.
Hey, perhaps I'm overlooking something, but are there different levels to the Broken Base trope, or some related offshoots? I noticed recently that the YMMV for ''Spider-Man: Homecoming'' features a few fandom nitpicky arguments, such as Aunt May's casting. Contrast this to more divisive issues, such as George Lucas' edits to the original Star Wars trilogy, or Chris Brown and R. Kelly's assault charges in regards to women. Is there a trope for Fandom Disagreements (or something similarly named) for divisive issues that are much smaller in scale and/or not that divisive ?
Edited by madius Hide / Show RepliesIt sounds like they're just shoehorning. There's a Broken Base cleanup thread right now; I'd bring it up there and ask for input.
Can somebody help me find the source for the quote at the bottom of the page?
The correct answer is Sisko.
No, Janeway!
.*sigh* Here We Go Again
But what about Archer?
You mean Archer? Or that Archer?
Whatever! The point is, Chris Pine is Kirk is clearly the superior Kirk!
.*Chirping Crickets*
Get him!
Since one of the links is to SF Debris I assume it's from one of his videos, but can anybody tell me which one? Thanks in advance.
Edited by Snowybird77 "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do. 'Cause that's all there is. What we do. Today."Not like these. for instance, A Tribe Called Quest fans hated the 4th album but was otherwise always unified. Now compare that to Metalica...do they even still have any fans? lol
This is exactly what I was thinking. Even franchises that are considered Sacred Cows will likely have a few who will complain They Changed It, Now It Sucks! about something. From what I gather, this trope mostly extends to the extremely vocal ones.
About this:
- The latest one is over the use of the phrase "This Troper", and whether or not it should be allowed outside of Troper Tales
Um....why was the Politics sub page deleted? Was there ever a discussion about it before it was cut??

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'm confused as to why this is YMMV. It seems to me that a series having a broken fanbase is a fact, not opinion. People's opinions are why this trope is in effect. Or maybe I've just read this trope wrong. Either way, can someone please clarify?
Hide / Show RepliesYou know, mabye we should get rid of all the examples like we did with Unpleasable Fanbase, since it's eaiser to list aversions.
Why does this trope have a characters subfolder when there's an entirely seperate trope for characters of this variety?
This is still a signature. Hide / Show RepliesThe newer entries not covered in base breaker needs to be moved there from broken base before the character sub-folder is deleted.
Wait, why haven't I heard of those that declared Half-Life 2 as being a terrible game?
Wouldn't like every example under the 'characters' section belong in Base Breaker? Or am I missing something?
I couldn't conceive a dream so wet; your bongos make me congo. Hide / Show Repliesnot necessarily...base breaker isn't just about character's a but a specific instance i believe. where as broken base is just you know in general.
Is there a reason there's no Star Wars entry/page? Star Wars has one of the biggest broken bases in fandom. What's the deal?
