How about Mega evolution introduced in generation VI where some pokemon temporarily evolve into a fourth stage of evolution?
After six regions, Alola is the first where Ash doesn't catch the regional bird Pokémon.
Not only Rowlet is a "regional bird" in the literal sense of the term( He was introduced in Alola), Taillow is found in only a handful of routes and their location is later in the game than Spearow(he definitively is not a Com Mon) and finally exists other bird in the game earlier than him that is found in the same number of routes than Pidgey.
