The main page says

Note that there are several legitimate reasons why the villain may opt to let the hero walk away; if any of these are in play, this trope is not.

But then proceeds to list practically all the bullet points under Justified in the Playing With page. This seems contradictory. Either reasons given for the villain not immediately killing the heroes are BVS, Justified, or they’re not this trope at all. Which is it?

Has anyone ever played with this Trope by seemingly playing it completely annoyingly straight right up until the hero doesn't escape and is in fact killed horribly by the elaborate death trap?

This occurs at least once in every book of Anthoney Horrowitzes' Alex Rider series. Sometimes even twice in the same book.

Should the Cocodrile's example from One Piece count or is an aversion of the trope. The thing is that after having impaled someone in the chest with a hook and buried him in quicksand, one could reasonably assume is death.
