Such as a disorder which caused their blood to be less able to carry oxygen and thus appear blue. Is there any truth to this or am I another victim of American schools teaching crap instead of facts?

Very, very, very late response, but I've only ever heard the "so pale that you could see their blue veins" explanation. The alternative one seems like a massive reach.
