The explanation I always got made the cow juices a bonus rather than a drawback, that "the meat contains enzymes that help reduce swelling and promote healing". That said, the people saying it were probably just repeating what they'd heard others say to justify it.

I have no idea if this is worth a Real Life example or not. But I recently discovered that the US CVS Pharmacy chain actually sells cold packs full of gel beads called "Peas." The old "frozen peas" trick, without wasting perfectly good vegetables!

I'm fairly certain there's at least one instance of a character using a steak this way, and then cooking it, I just can't remember what it's from...
You should just call this trope Beef Icepack instead.
